Medicare Supplement Made Easy

Medicare Supplement insurance, also called Medigap, is sold by private insurers. It helps pay certain deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments left by Original Medicare. Benefits depend on the plan you choose.

When can I buy a Medicare Supplement?

Your federal Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts six months. It starts in the first month you are age 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this period, an insurer cannot refuse to sell you an available Medigap policy or charge more because of your health. Rules about waiting periods for pre-existing conditions can still apply.

You can apply outside this period, but an insurer may review your health, charge a higher premium, or decline your application unless you have a guaranteed issue right or another applicable protection. Medigap does not have the same annual enrollment window as Medicare Advantage and Part D. Before changing policies, confirm acceptance and the new coverage start date.

Texas has additional protections for some people under 65 who qualify for Medicare. See the Texas Department of Insurance guide and Medicare's enrollment guidance for eligibility details.

Comparing plans and premiums

Texas uses standardized Medigap plans identified by letters. Policies with the same plan letter offer the same standardized benefits, while premiums, underwriting, and other policy features can differ by insurer. Compare both the coverage and the cost before choosing a policy.

Is Plan G right for me?

Plan G covers several expenses left by Original Medicare, but it does not cover the Part B deductible. Plan N has different cost sharing. We can help you compare available plans with your budget and coverage preferences.

* Plan N has copayments of up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits that do not lead to inpatient admission.

In 2026, the Part B deductible is $283. Plans K and L have annual out-of-pocket limits of $8,000 and $4,000 respectively; after the applicable limit and Part B deductible are met, they pay all covered services for the rest of that year.

High-deductible versions of Plans F and G are available in some states, with a $2,950 deductible in 2026. Plans C and F are unavailable to people who first became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020.

Foreign travel benefits have separate limits and a deductible. For full benefit details and current annual amounts, use Medicare's official plan comparison and the CMS high-deductible announcements.
